Management of spinal disorders

The prevalence of acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is estimated to be 236 per million in India, with consequences such as full loss of spinal movements, incontinence of bladder functions, bed sores, etc. There is no satisfactory treatment available in modern medicine. The limited treatments available only enable restricted enhancement of spinal cord function. Ayurvedic drugs and procedures have been in use to treat such conditions with great efficacy for a long time.

Much of the morbidity associated with SCI occurs due to the limited intrinsic ability of the spinal cord to recover following transaction or contusion. The pathophysiology of SCI is considered biphasic, meaning recovery in two phases, in nature. Primary injury results from mechanical force injuring the spinal cord. Secondary injury occurs via the subsequent edema, ischemia, inflammation, cytokine production, free radical damage, glial scar formation, apoptosis, and necrosis. SCI is associated with worse outcomes and requires prolonged rehabilitation.

Arth Ayurveda adopts a compose treatment plan, involving Ayurvedic oral medications as well as a few selected external and internal therapeutic procedures, centered around indigenous rehabilitative techniques to intervene in various neurological, muscular, and locomotory deficits. Common conditions where such interventions are undertaken include neurological deficits caused by cerebra-vascular accidents, cerebral atrophy, and SCIs. The rehabilitative techniques adopted in such conditions are composed of various classical heat and oil treatments done externally, oil and herbal decoction treatments done internally in addition to oral therapies. Neurological, rheumatologic, and degenerative joint disease together form a substantial sum of total patients we treat.

SPINAL CORD TRAUMA / INJURY: Adopting a holistic approach, Arth Ayurveda’s comprehensive treatment plan involves:

1. Ayurvedic Oral medications (Brihat Vata Chintamani Rasa, Sahacharadi Kashaya, Dashamoola Kashaya , Ashwagandha preparations etc ).

2. Therapeutic procedures such as Shashtika Shali pinda sweda (sudation with medicated cooked bolus of rice), Matra Basti - Mustayaapanaadi basti (medicated enema) et al.

3. Yoga - helps in improving the posture, mobility (provides less risk of secondary health complications such as pressure sores)

Various surgical procedures, stem cell implantation therapy & other medical interventions are used in modern biomedicine, but with limitations. Ayurvedic interventions have shown to help in complete recovery.

SPINAL DEFORMITY: Spinal deformity occurs when the normal curves of the spine changes. This may occur owing to age related wear & tear on the back, due to injury, birth defect or previous spinal surgery. Most common type of spinal deformity in adults is degenerative scoliosis. Imbalance in the weight from both sides leads to the bend in the spine.

Ayurveda attributes the condition to be as a result of vitiated vata dosha which accumulates in muscles, eventually leading to the spasms. At Arth Ayurveda, using therapeutic procedures we remove all the accumulated toxins & help relax all the muscles & joints of the spine. Treatment procedures, prescribed according to the Prakruthi and specific disease conditions involve processes such as Basti (Medicated Enemas), Patrapottali Swedana, Abhyanga, Udwartana, Jambeera Pinda Swedana, Virechana etc. The patient is put through appropriate Yoga asanas with the help of an expert for improving the posture as well as to provide strength to the muscles.

SPINAL INSTABILITY/ LUMBAR INSTABILITY: This occurs when the intervertebral discs in the spine begin to degenerate. The bulge of the disc decreases & begins to lose its height causing the vertebrae to displace from their anatomical position & override the disc. This action eventually produces friction, causing severe pain & other symptoms, increasing the risk of spinal arthritis & impairing the ability of the body to maintain its structure & movements.

Arth Ayurveda’s comprehensive treatment approach of Ayurveda at slowing down the degenerative progression, involves Therapeutic procedures including Basti (medicated enemas), Sthanika Basthi (Kati & Prishta Bastis ) Avagaha Swedana, Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda ,Patrapottali Swedana, Abhyanga etc, as well as detoxifying Virechana karma. Yoga & lifestyle modifications are also required for long standing results
