Ayurveda deals exclusively with disorders of Ear, Nose, Throat, Eye, Dental, Head and Neck in Shalakya Tantra, an important branch devoted to diseases situated above the clavicle.

One out of the eight branches of Ayurveda, Shalakya Tantra deals with the etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, prevention and treatment of diseases located in and around the head. Since Shalakya Tantra deals with narrow and delicate parts of body, various specialized instruments are used for diagnosis and treatment. Hence, the specialists of Shalakya Tantra are called Shalaki and probing instruments which used for therapeutic and diagnostic purpose is named Shalaka. The branch gets it name from this instrument meaning ‘Probe’. There are different types of probes used, Netra Shalaka to probe the eye, Karna Shalaka probe the ear , Nasa Shalaka probe of the nose, Mukh Shalaka of the throat and Oshta Shalaka of the lips.

Nasal medications for many Eye diseases, ENT diseases, Head, Hair and Scalp diseases, like Long sightedness, Short sightedness, Rhinitis, Deafness, Hair fall, Dandruff etc.

Instillation of the medicated solution from two angular heights into the conjunctive sac when the eye is completely open and patient is in supine position. This procedure is indicated as first line of treatment in all ocular inflammatory conditions like conjunctivitis, visual defects, dry eye etc.

The Procedure involves pouring of fine/thin stream of medicated solution into the closed eyes for a stipulated period, and the treatment is used for treating acute and severe affections of the eye red eye, retinopathies, and eye lid swelling etc

In Pindi-mild sudation is applied over the eye through a bolus of luke warm paste made out of medicinal vegetation and herbs, chosen according to the Prakriti and disease condition of the patient. In Bidalaka– paste of appropriate medicinal combination is applied over the closed eyelids leaving the eye lashes, thickness akin to that of an Ayurveda facial, Mukha Lepa. This procedure is followed for conditions like Conjuctivitis, Glaucoma, Inflammatory conditions of eye, mostly in the diseases of eye lids and lacrimal apparatus- Stye, Blepharitis, Lid Abscess, Trichiasis.

Tarpana is the best method of inducing sanguinity to eyes. The procedure is used in a variety of ocular disorders such as Squinting, Symptomatic Visual Disturbances, Dryness, Glaucoma, Scleral Diseases, Eye Redness, Dry Eye etc.

Putapaka is topical application of extracts prepared out of plant drugs, animal flesh, mineral drugs and fats, by heating their mixture (paste) in a closed chamber. The procedure is carried out after Tarpana in diseases like Macular Edema, Diabetic Retinopathy, Hypertensive Retinopathy, Pterygium and other degenerative diseases.

The procedure involves instilling medicated oil in the ear for diseases like Deafness, Ear Pain, Giddiness etc.

Karna Poorna is a procedure involving ear fumigation to treat Severe Ear Pain, Ear Discharge and Fungal diseases of ear.

Kesha lepa involves application of medicated paste on the scalp in treating diseases of hair and scalp like Greying of Hair, Hairfall, Dandruff etc.

The procedure involves pouring and application of medicated oils on and over the head and is used in treating Headaches, Hairfall, Grey Hair, Eye Diseases etc.
